Flutes en Route is an innovative and exciting trip around the world, through the age-old magic of music, and the new age magic of multimedia. This journey will transport your audience through time and space, with exciting experiences at every stop. World-class flutist Douglas Miller performs pieces from around the world, played on the indigenous instruments of the peoples and cultures identified with the music. Doug’s mastery with these instruments, ranging from the pan flute to the didgeridoo, transforms the stage into a moving platform, whisking the audience away from the “here and now”, and taking them to the “there and then”. Doug is the Principal Flute of the Niagara Symphony and an active freelance musician in Southern Ontario. He is flutist with the Sound of Music orchestra, currently playing in Toronto and has played many shows in Toronto and around the world including the Lion King, Cats and Jane Eyre. Accompanying Doug on his journey is percussionist Laura Thomas, whose arrangements and compositions help bring the Flutes en Route trip to life. A talented conductor, Laura brings her considerable composing experience to the journey, book-ending the varied pieces of this incredible trip with music composed specifically to showcase Doug’s virtuosity on the over twenty instruments used in the program. Laura is the Associate Conductor and Principal Percussionist of the Niagara Symphony, as well as Music Director of the Niagara Youth Orchestra, Artistic Director of Choralis Camerata and WomEnchant, and a member of the eclectic folk/blues group BroadBand. Our guide to the visual elements of this journey is director Bruce MacDonald, who has over twenty years of professional musical and theatrical experience. Bruce’s lighting design and projected images bring the stage to life, supporting the music and giving the performance a stunning visual impact seldom seen in the concert hall. The Flutes En Route Ensemble includes: Eric Mahar (guitar), Monica Fedrigo (cello), Greg Diakun (piano).
