In the Soil Arts Festival is turning 10 this year and everyone is invited! This growing celebration is brought to downtown St. Catharines each spring to showcase original music, theatre, dance, spoken word, film, media art, street art and one-time performance experiences. The good time is set for 27 – 29 April 2018.

Early bird festival passes are ON SALE NOW for only $35 (until 12midnight on Fri 30 March 2018) and provide first-come, first-serve access to over 150 acts and installations. Festival passes are $50 as of 31 March 2018 (still a massive deal).

In the Soil Arts Festival is now accepting applications for the 9th annual multidisciplinary arts festival set to take over downtown St. Catharines from 28-30 April 2017.

Artists of all levels of experience are invited to apply. This year, In the Soil will present 150+ dance, film, media, music, theatre and interdisciplinary works over the 3-day festival. We are seeking out new artistic work and out-of-the-box ideas. We want you to dream big with us as we create a happening in downtown St. Catharines like no other.

Applications are due by Friday 4 November 2016 @ 11:59pm.

Last year over 500 artists and 5000 festival patrons came together to celebrate the arts of Niagara and beyond. This year, we continue in our aim to contribute to a Niagara that is self-determining and culturally distinct.

Downtown St. Catharines is in the midst of a renaissance with the completion of new dedicated facilities for the performing arts. The festival has already begun developing plans with Brock’s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and looks forward to exploring these state of the art buildings for the 2016 edition.

St. Catharines – A growing celebration that has been brought to you with a lot of heart, In the Soil Arts Festival is back for the 8th annual showcase of original music, theatre, dance, spoken word, film, media art, street art and one-time performance experiences from 29 April – 1 May 2016.

Early bird festival passes are ON SALE NOW for only $30 (until 6pm on Monday 29 Feb 2016) and provide first-come, first-serve access to over 150 acts and installations. Festival passes are $40 thereafter.

It has been a banner year for downtown St. Catharines with the arrival of Brock’s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. The streets are filled with new life each day and In the Soil Arts Festival is proud to grow with new venues and partners, celebrating the rich past and bright future of the downtown St. Catharines with a lense for the unexpected and extraordinary.

A FEW 2016 HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Over 600 artists will be in downtown St. Catharines to welcome spring with open arms in 12+ performance and installation venues;
  • A warm and cozy festival hub on James Street (between St. Paul and King Streets) that will include the Vendor Bender Arts Market in partnership with Craft Arts Market, delicious local beer and wine, interactive activities and our festival stage.

Let’s get down! In the Soil Arts Festival starts tomorrow.

Downtown will be bursting with creativity as over 600 artists make their way to the festival!

Friday 25 April is the kick off of the 6th annual In the Soil Arts Festival. Here’s just a few of the things to see, do, eat, drink, and experience on Day One:

  • Meet us at the Outdoor Festival Hub at 5pm ON St. Paul Street. We are raising the noise and the spirits of downtown St. Catharines with a special festival launch featuring artists, volunteers and our pals from The Woodshed Orchestra. And we’re FILMING IT with Adam CK Vollick and Fourgrounds Media Inc. for a short documentary. Drinks by Oast House Niagara Brewers andCreekside Estate Winery.
  • PLAYS, COMEDY, POETRY: Check out the schedule for events at The Courthouse Theatre, Mikado and Niagara Artists Centre. Tim the Tool Man Taylor is expected to make an appearance at the Mikado, and The OtherHoudini.
  • MUSIC: Buck 65 will headline the street party at The Festival Hub, and there are JAM-PACKED lineups at The Merchant Ale House, Detour Music Hall and a late night set at the Mikado.
  • STREETSCAPE, FILM, MEDIA AND VISUAL ARTS: When you get downtown, grab your festival guide and take a tour of the charming and inventive works installed for the festival. Plan to be at the Short Film Series and Media Arts Hub (122 St. Paul St.) this weekend too.
  • Swing by the OPENING NIGHT DANCE PARTY at Fourgrounds Media Inc. and catch the opening of RHIZOMES.
  • … And that’s just Friday!!!

The countdown is on. Just over one week to go and downtown St. Catharines will be bursting at the seams with music, theatre, film, comedy, artisans, a ferris wheel and more! This is going to be the biggest and boldest In the Soil Arts Festival to date. Join us for the launch onFriday 25 April @ 5pm at our outdoor hub.

We will be taking over 2 blocks of St. Paul St. with a fully equipped outdoor hub to host 23 acts over the festival weekend, with beer by Niagara Oast House Brewers and wine by Creekside Estate Winery served all weekend long. We’ve invited some stellar food vendors to compliment the many delectable dine-in and take-out restaurants offering sweet festival deals in downtown St. Catharines. 

This year, we’ve partnered with Gathering Niagara to bring together an impressive variety of artisans set to sell their original wares at the 2014 Vendor Bender. Christmas has come early in downtown St. Catharines. Have a look at what’s in store HERE.

Oh, and did we mention the FERRIS WHEEL? Don’t miss this rare opportunity to look high over downtown St. Catharines at the making of The New Performing Arts Centre(PAC). Stay tuned for special pop-up performances going ’round, and our PAC and ME selfie contest! #PACandME
